Halloween in Panama, Cows in Pennsylvania

Halloween is apparently going to be a lot of fun here in Panama.  While I collect experiences and maybe a few photos today, here are two photos related to my porch back in Pennsylvania to tide you over in the meanwhile.

Photo number one is courtesy of a former student of mine who wrote to ask for a letter of recommendation as she applies to grad school.  She ended the letter with this postscript:

PS. It was actually fall break when I was writing this email and I was drafting this email in Lancaster! [Another former student] and I passed your home when we were strolling around near the neighborhood and we  saw the cute message "The cows are on Vacation!"

"The cows are on vacation;
they will return June 2025"

As for Photo Number Two . . . In spite of the cow shelves and all the cows themselves being stowed away in the basement while I'm here in Panama, and even though the "Take a Cow/Leave A Cow" Little Farm Library similarly sits in storage, my home caretaker whatsapped me to say,

Also someone left a cow offering on the front porch! Thought you would like it

It is true; I've never had a pistol-packing Cow Girl Mermaid pin before.
And apparently, now I do.

    I walked past yesterday on my way home from yoga, and some trick-or-treaters were admiring the photos on your sign. Looking forward to reading about your Halloween in Panama!

My first stop on my pre-trip to Panama is the Bridges Math and Art conference, which is just barely over as I write this now. This is a five-day conference that drew 437 people from 31 different countries to share their approaches, discoveries, and delight in pulling together mathematical art. In addition to lectures, there were poetry readings, music nights, a play (in which I got to play both a spy disguised as a Catholic priest, and also a man in drag!), and excursions to the nearby Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, University of Virginia campus, and Monticello. The Pre-Adventures Begin!

The adventures begin! Or, at least, the windup to the adventures have begun.   I've done paperwork, so much paperwork;  I've purchased travel tickets and reserved the AirBnB; I've cleaned up the house to make space for our caretaker EJ;  I've sent the dog to live with the next generations;  I've packed my suitcases and papers upon papers; I've said good bye to friends and colleagues; I've arranged airport pick up; In an hour or two, I'll get in the car with my husband and the Kindle, and we'll head off into the distance. To be clear, we're not going to Panama for another two weeks.  Our plane takes off from Harrisburg International Airport on the morning of August 15.  Weather permitting and the grace of God staving off other problems, we'll land in Panama City that same afternoon.  So I've got a little while before I can start sending photos of the real  adventure. In the meanwhile, though, I've vacated my home for the next two weeks

All packed and ready to go!

I've been living out of my suitcase in my own home for the past few days, which is an odd experience. I mostly packed for Panama two weeks ago, before I went on my math conference trips.  Once I got back from those trips, I did some reorganization, but tried not to spread out too much, both so I wouldn't lose things, and also to make sure our home caretaker has empty spaces to move into. My husband and I will be taking one carry-on each. I will have a suitcase which is really a suitcase/duffelbag combo, which I think is super clever.
