The Spinach Tree

My AirBnb is a separate space within a larger house/complex; we share a patio and driveway, but the individual living spaces are separate.  Anna, one of the people who lives in the main house in the complex, is an avid gardener, and loves giving me the tour of all she's planted and that she's tending.

The other day she encouraged me to pick my own spinach from this spinach tree.

The Spinach tree!

The "tree" part isn't actually spinach; the tree supports the vines that grow up through it, and so there's spinach all over at eye level.

Spinach for the taking.

She's repeated the offer several times: so much spinach grows, and I should pick it.  As someone who loves both dark leafy vegetables and also found food, I am very happy to take her (and her tree) up on the offer!

As a side note, the only live snake that I've seen so far in Panama --- a harmless, skinny garden snake --- was in this tree when Anna pointed it out to me. I'm not eating the snake.

  1. This is a cool tree!! It is different from the 'Chinese Spanish' though: those are not grown as tress but small sparate ones like a how celery grows.
